Blackjack 101 - Rules and Primer
Blackjack is an easy game to learn and to get into. The object of the game is to simply have a hand who’s total exceeds that of the dealer without going over the 21 count limit. What makes this a winnable game compared to other gambling games is the fact that the player’s only opponent is the dealer. Even if there are other players in the table, only the dealer and your cards matter.
Only a few decisions must be considered when you play blackjack. This is part of the appeal of blackjack, players don’t need to learn complex rules to enjoy the game.
The game is played as follows; each player is dealt a card face up with the last card being dealt to the dealer. This card lies face down and it is called the hole card. Once this is accomplished, another face up card is dealt to each player. Beginning with the player to the left most part of the dealer, the players then decide if they will draw another card. The last card drawn is for the dealer.
The player wins if the total value of the cards the player has exceeds that of the dealer. If however, the player has a total value higher than 21, then that is considered as a “bust” and the player loses the game. A stand off occurs when the player and the dealer’s cards have a similar total value. This is considered a draw and the player’s bet is handed back returned back to the player.
The values for the cards are as follows; picture cards are valued 10 points each, an ace can either be 1 point or 11 points - whichever benefits the player the most, and the numbered cards have their respective values. As with most other card games, joker cards are not included in blackjack.
A blackjack is the term given to a combination of an ace and any other picture cards or cards with a face value of 10. This should occur with the first two cards dealt to the player. Instead of a normal pay out, the winning player who draws a blackjack is paid one and a half times the player’s bet. A stand off can still take place however. This happens if the dealer also has a blackjack.
Easy isn’t it? Because of blackjack’s simplicity, it’s popularity will continue to grow and more players will be drawn to this fun and rewarding game.
